Miles Hyman, born in Vermont (New England) and a long-time resident of France, is one of the most intriguing artists working at the intersection of painting and literature. Having grown up in a deeply cultured family—where visual art and literature were part of his everyday environment—he developed a visual language that brings these two worlds together in an exceptional way. His graphic interpretations of literary classics, such as John Dos Passos’ Manhattan Transfer and The Lottery by his grandmother Shirley Jackson, bear witness to this unique cross-pollination. In his paintings, the visual echoes of two continents converge. The neon colours of American billboards, deserted petrol stations along Route 66 and tranquil, dreamlike figures meet the impressionist sensibility of French painting. His cloudy skies, rich in colour and nuance, exude both nostalgia and modernity. Influences from Edward Hopper and Norman Rockwell are palpable, as are literary resonances from F. Scott Fitzgerald and James Ellroy. The exhibition Miles Hyman invites you on an intimate journey, a “secret dive” into this extraordinary universe — a world where stories, images and memories merge. A journey of discovery that is not to be missed.
